Tangjiawu Formation

Tangjiawu Fm

Period:
Silurian

Age Interval:
Telychian of Silurian (S1), (64)

Province:
Zhejiang

Type Locality and Naming

Shu Wenbo (1930) proposed the Tangjiawu Sandstone. The type section is located at Tangjiawu Village, Fuyang County, Zejiang Province.

Synonym: (唐家坞组); Tangchianu Fm

Lithology and Thickness

The Tangjiawu Fm is dominated by purplish red sandstone and grayish green fine-to-medium-grained quartzose sandstone, intercalated with silty pelite. The thickness varies considerably from 670-1300 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Sandstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The purplish red sandstone at the base of the formation represents the index bed of conformable contact of the formation with the underlying Kangshan Fm

Upper contact

The top of the formation is pseudo-conformably overlain by the Xihu Fm of the Upper Devonian.

Regional extent

The formation is distributed in Changhua-Anji, where the purplish red beds at the lower part of the formation are rather thick, and is also exposed in Changshan-Hangzhou, where those purplish red beds are less developed and reduced in thickness. The formation northwards may progressively be facies-changed into the Maoshan Fm, but the exact boundaries are difficult to be defined.
